The Hive at Kew Gardens

WOW! I was excited to be asked by Wolfgang Buttress to photograph the UK Pavilion at Milan Expo Last year. You can see that HERE. This year The HIVE is back. This time at KEW GARDENS, London.  Its just impossible to explain the experience of the installation, its just so atmospheric and almost conjures a dreamlike state. For me at least. Its just magical. So when I was asked to come to Kew to photograph it again this year I jumped at the chance. Thinking of the experience on the run up to the shoot I imagined the energy of a hive, and the beautiful drawings and watercolours by Wolfgang and wondered how I could represent these elements in a photo. Its so tough. You can only visit for yourselves. For now here is a taster from last weekend's shoot. More to come really soon.

Hete Kolen by Team 4 Architecten

1 Year ago this week I was lucky enough to photograph the fantastic new office and student housing building in Groningen by Team 4 Architecten.  The building sits in the Groningen Europark next to the football stadium. A flaming orange facade atop a foundation of carbon black basalt where many years ago the coal was taken from. All images shot on sony A7rii with Canon TS-24mm, TS-45mm

ICC Permanent premises, DEN HAAG

The new international Criminal Court in Den Haag (ICC Permanent premises, The Hague) is finally open.  I have been lucky to be able to photograph this incredible new building by Schmidt Hammer Lassen in the last few weeks. I took my A7Rii and my Tilt Shift lenses down to the Hague, a 1 hour journey from home in Amsterdam, to spend a couple of days photographing the new building. Its amazing how this new camera can capture the finest details and have such soft transitions in light across sharp changes in light conditions.

The facade of the building looks uniform but on closer inspection the glazed and opaque panels are inserted at angles and so reflect the light in a very interesting way and make it much more dynamic . The hues of the sunlight reflecting from the building are stunning, in particular in the warmth of morning or late afternoon.  The A7rii captures is with such ease.

Such well thought out and crafted buildings certainly make architectural photography easy and as it goes it doesnt get much better than this. These kind of projects really excite me. I may have moved on from my career as an architect but good architecture is still in my heart. If I can tell the story of a project with some beautiful images then my path is complete.

Granville Park by NIMTIM Architects

Fantastic piece of re-work refurbishment of this lovely home in Lewisham, London. The attention to detail and nuance is a bit special in this house. Simple key moments all set of with a grand gesture in the double height volume linking the lower and ground floors. All shot with a Sony A7r camera. Canon lenses of course.

More Business Headshots

Business headshots have really taken off this year, especially for architects.  I think I even had more portrait shoots than architecture. It was a lot.  If you need headshots for your practice then please get in touch.

Zernike College by Team 4 Architecten

I was delighted to be asked to photograph two new schools by Team 4 of Groningen this year.  It took a long time from commission to completion due to the schools being newly built. Nevertheless between August and October Ifitted in 4 shoots days and completed the work last week.  For now this post shows the new Zernike College in Haren, Netherlands.

Lucent - Chicago by Wolfgang Buttress

Beautiful Sculpture and Installation in Chicago deisigned by Wolfgang Buttress.  What a pleasure to be asked to photograph it.  The more you see it the more mesmerising it becomes.  Simply stunning.

Alfriston School by Duggan Morris Architects

The wonderful Alfriston School extension in London by Duggan Morris Architects.  Not just a pool but a full on piece of exquisite architecture from micro to macro.  The folded facade and roof are a wonder of design and construction and add a significant amount of drama to the experience for the users at the school.  From the photos it appears gand and great in size but is in fact a modest scale in keeping with the lower school proportions of the pupils.  All photos are shot with the Sony A7R and the Canon 17mm and 24m TS-E lenses.
